FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2005 NEC CODE REQUIRES UL EXPOSED RUN (-ER)
COMPLIANCE FOR CABLE EXTENDING FROM CABLE TRAYS:
ALPHA WIRE INDUSTRIAL SERIES ALREADY APPROVED
The recently released National Electrical Code (NEC, 2005) amends the way cable should be extended out of cable trays. Once limited by the Code to the use of metal clad (MC) cables or metal conduit, the 2005 Code permits the use of UL Exposed Run (-ER) Compliant cable.
The 2005 NEC addresses two types of cables - specifically Section 725.61 (D) (4) for Power Limited Tray Cable (PLTC), and Section 336.10 (7) for Tray Cable (TC). TC is a 600 volt rated design and PLTC is 300 volt rated. The Code now permits both cable types to be run at any length.
The implications of the revised Exposed Run (-ER) Code will be far reaching. In particular, installation of cable from trays will be easier as difficult MC will be replaced by thinner, more flexible cable approved for Exposed Run (-ER) or Open Wiring use. Trying to get from trays to utilization (black) boxes using conduit or MC is difficult and tedious, and these rigid solutions methods do not lend themselves to environments subjected to vibrations.
Exposed Run (-ER) and Open Wiring Compliant cable can provide the mechanical integrity and strength of MC and conduit, and offer flexibility for easier, faster installation. The UL TC-ER approval is granted to cable that has passed tough compression and durability tests, and has been judged to be equal to MC in its ability to maintain electrical integrity.
Alpha Wire Cables Get UL Exposed Run (-ER) Approval
Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES Cable is among the first to receive a UL Exposed Run (-ER) Rating and Alpha Wire Company is the only wire and cable manufacturer to offer an entire range of UL Exposed Run (-ER) Compliant solutions. In fact, the Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES – SERIES F, SERIES M and SERIES P cables are approved in their entirety, along with SERIES L cable and the new SERIES V Enhanced Design High Performance, Small Diameter Variable Frequency Drive Cable.
“The Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES has the hard-earned reputation for durability and toughness," said Tony Gabriel, Director of Engineering for Alpha Wire Company, "so achieving this demanding Exposed Run (-ER) Listing was straightforward. Our engineers made some performance enhancement to the Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES, but more as a natural progression - the way we continually work to improve our products through feedback from our customers."
"The 2005 NEC is a step forward in both ease of use and safety. From a safety perspective, the NEC mandates just four methods of running wire from cable trays - metal clad, conduit, Open Wiring and now Exposed Run (-ER). Anything else is not to Code and could be dangerous. From an ease of use perspective, there's no comparison: MC and conduit are not conducive to system design and are expensive to work with. Our flexible, thinner diameter Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES cables offer protection, ease of use and better cable performance. Once the 2005 NEC proliferates, we believe the advantages of Alpha Wire's compliant products will become evident."
The Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES, which includes SERIES F, SERIES M, SERIES P, SERIES L, SERIES S and SERIES V, combines durability and flexibility into cables that are extremely cost efficient. Ideally suited for applications demanding strength, resilience and the ability to resist harsh operating environments, the Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES is the cable line of choice for all UL Exposed Run (-ER) and Open Wiring applications including factory equipment interconnects, automotive assembly equipment, robotics, conveyor systems, control panels and general manufacturing equipment. Inherent in the Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES is high performance, oil and chemical resistance and unparalleled durability for use in high technology settings.
